Ferris’s worthy first in a series set in post-WWII Britain introduces Danny McRae, a private investigator struggling to recover from his traumatic time in a Nazi camp. A well-to-do woman hires Danny, who suffers from amnesia, to track down her missing lover, with whom she was quarreling just before an unexploded bomb went off and destroyed her London flat. The man, whose body was not discovered in the ruins, turns out to be none other than Tony Caldwell, a man who may hold the key to Danny’s lost past. Word of a serial killer’s rampage triggers disturbing visions in Danny’s mind, and a stolen report confirms that he may be a greater monster than he ever suspected. The unfortunate detective must contend with lies and misleading information as he fumbles his way toward what he hopes will be the truth. The second in the series, The Unquiet Heart, was published in the U.S. in 2008.
