To commemorate Star Trek's fiftieth anniversary, in 2016, Ruditis and DK have assembled a visually appealing compilation of basic Trek history, including the alternate universe set up in the films Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013). The passageswhether about particular characters, species, or technologyfeature images, sidebars, tables, and quotations that make this book pleasing to flip through. Some excerpts are even humorous; a graph in Montgomery Scott's profile, for example, compares his estimated repair time to his actual repair time, and the former is nearly five times as much as the latter. Die-hard fans won't learn anything new here, but it's an attractive refresher for casual Trekkers or a suitable introduction for those just starting to get into the new movies.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
