One morning a little rabbit sat on a bank. He pricked his ears and listened to the trit-trot, trit-trot of a pony. A gig was coming along the road; it was driven by Mr. McGregor, and beside him sat Mrs. McGregor in her best bonnet. As soon as they had passed, little Benjamin Bunny slid down into the road, and set off—with a hop, skip, and a jump—to call upon his relations, who lived in the wood at the back of Mr. McGregor's garden.

Nothing good comes of the outing in which Benjamin Bunny takes his cousin Peter Rabbit back to the scene of his close call in Mr. McGregor's garden. Peter is jumpy as he sees his clothes on the scarecrow, and Benjamin is just a bit too brazen in masterminding their recovery before the two escape with an additional vegetable bonus for the family. Rosemary Leach gently narrates this quiet tale. She is true to Beatrix Potter's tone of understatement and careful detail as she recounts each event--Peter's clumsiness, the snap of Mr. Benjamin Bunny's switch as he walks the wall, and Mr. McGregor's puzzlement at the tiny footprints in his garden. Musical interludes provide both characterization and a complement to the tale's mood. A.R. (c) AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine
