The Maker, Nora, has taught herself what she could about magic and making. However, no teacher has ever shown up. The fairies from the clockwork kingdom still visit Dale on an annual basis, asking him to work with them.
This year, Cornelius, the head of the fairies, brings news: The dwarf Kostya has returned.
A teacher breaks through the spells surrounding the town to find Nora, to warn her that a monster has been keeping her from learning.
